Transition Year
Fourth Year at St. Joseph’s College is a varied and challenging experience.
Transition Year incorporates a number of elements necessary for a well-balanced education. It is an invaluable experience combining continued academic progress and personal development with the world of work.
The Transition Year Programme involves the following core subjects:
Irish, English, and Maths Combined with:
Arts & Crafts, Business Studies, Communications, Drama, Environmental Studies, IT French, German, Personal Development, Guidance, Home Economics, Science, Law & Politics, PE, Music, Tourism
In Transition Year personal development and establishing links with work are a very important part of the course. Our students spend three to four weeks on work experience, an essential element for their future career choice. Links with society are central to the programme as many of these students go on to participate in exciting and educational experiences like the French and German Exchanges. These exchanges allow students to immerse themselves in the language and culture of these countries. It also introduces colour and interest to school life when French and German students join us for classes.

Young Scientists
Students from Transition Year have competed very successfully in the Young Scientist Competition over the years. They have several category wins and many have been highly recommended on numerous occasions.
Students have also had success in the Form & Fusion Competition, a fashion show with a difference.Transition Years are involved in Gaisce Awards, the Copernicus Project and Environmental Awareness Programmes.
Sport is an important component of the year with students having access to a wide variety of sporting activities. Among the sporting activities enjoyed by Transition Year students are Swimming, Basketball, Volleyball, Dance, Horse Riding, Aerobics, Tai-Quando, Circuit training, Bowling and more.
The highlight of Transition Year is the school Musical. Over the years the school has produced some wonderful shows discovering many gifted singers and musicians in the process.
All of these opportunities allow students develop their talents and abilities in an environment free from the stress of exams. Links with the community and wider participation in society are encouraged through involvement with work, media, voluntary organisations and colleges of further education.
It provides an invaluable opportunity for learning and growth.
