Summerhill march on to Connacht Final
The U18 Summerhill soccer team well deserved to reach the Connacht final. Our team did very well in the group stages of the competition and we proceeded through to the semi-final. We played Athenry in the semi-final and this was our greatest test so far in the competition as they proved a very defensive side and therefore it was hard to score. After a very close game Summerhill came out on top by winning 1-0 against this determined opposition.
We now face Mercy Convent from Roscommon in the final in early March. Summerhill and Mercy Convent have been very close rivals for many years when it comes to soccer and have met on several occasions when it comes to the serious part of the competitions. We are equally matched with good players on both sides and a competitive and exciting game awaits. We have already met and defeated Mercy Convent in the early part of the competition however we know not to take this for granted as they are a very good side and they will have improved a great deal since then.
Under 16 Connacht semi-final
St Josephs Summerhill came from a one goal half time deficit to find three second half goals to qualify for the Connacht u16 final. The game was played in cold windy conditions. The Mayo visitors scored at the 21st minute to put their side ahead. They held out until Blana Gately found the equiliser three minutes after the restart and after a number of close misses Summerhill found the net with three minutes remaining when Irish international Gillian Egan collected the goal kick and shot to the back of the net.Two minutes later victory was assured when she placed a beautiful free kick into the bottom corner. Afterwards the relieved Michael Gallagher gave his view on the match. "We got a bit of a shock in the first half and it was only in the second half that we started to play. They deserved to go one nil up. We didn't come out of the dressing room to be honest. The girls got a talk at half time that perked them up. Thankfully we started to play the ball out the wings and Blana Gately especially was brilliant out on the right wing. Gillians free kick went in from thirty five yards out and not many people would do that and it is something you wouldn't see in two many games. Shes an excellent footballer and did quite well. Blanas volley for the equaliser was brilliant and it put us back on par. Aisling Lennon and Ciara Galvin also had a big part in winning the match. Emma Freeburn played exceptionally in goal"
Overall it was a great match and Summerhill deserved to go through to the final.
