The Copernicus Project in Summerhill
The Copernicus Project now in existence since 1994 seeks to promote a better Europe of peace, goodwill and mutual understanding by providing opportunities for young people from all over the continent to meet for constructive dialogue and sharing of culture. Due largely to the utter dedication of its founder and tireless organizer, Sr. Gabrielle McManus, 45 international meetings involving young people across the length and breadth of Europe have taken place over the past thirteen years. From Summerhill to Slovakia, from Brussels to Belarus, students of St. Joseph’s, past and present have been privileged to be part of these unique and very enjoyable gatherings. In the past year alone, Summerhill girls have been to Versailles, The Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal as well as welcoming diverse groups here in Athlone.
